DIY: Pumpkins and Spiders and Bats… Oh My!

5:35:38 by Jessy | 2 Comments

Halloween is only weeks away, and if you’re looking for a darling way to decorate, you’re going to love this easy (and cute!) DIY project. You can whip up these kooky creatures in a few simple steps—so get the kids, grab the glue gun and get going.

Supplies

  • Small, artificial pumpkins (ours were made of foam, which made them easy to cut into)
  • X-Acto knife
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Black craft foam
  • Black spray paint
  • White cardstock (for the eyes!)
  • Black marker
  • Glue gun

Step 1: Spray and Dry

We thought matte spray paint fit the occasion best, so that’s what we sprayed our pumpkins with… but glossy works too! Cover your pumpkins completely with the spray paint and then leave them overnight to dry. Tip: using artificial pumpkins will keep your creatures from rotting, and will leave you with less of a mess to clean up.

Step 2: Wings and Eyeballs (Ew!)

Cut out your wings and create your eyes. We gave each little character their own expression: one scary, one sleepy and one silly! Feel free to get creative here. As for the bat wings, we drew a pattern into the foam, folded the foam in half and cut it out over two layers so the wings were identical.

Aren’t those festive fingernails the cutest?

Step 3: Flight and Sight

Use your X-Acto knife to cut a slit into the sides of your pumpkin. The slit should be the same length as the base of your bat wing. Once the base lines up with the slit, use the glue gun to secure it in place. Next, trim your eyes and use your marker to bring them to life. Now you’ll have flight and sight!

Step 4: Lots of Legs

Count out your pipe cleaners for your spiders and cut them in half (remember, each spider gets eight legs). Gently poke the pipe cleaners into place on the pumpkin, then bend them halfway down to create your legs. After all the legs are in place, glue on the eyes and you’ll be good to go.

See? It’s so easy, it’s scary.

DIY Valentine’s Day Decor

10:15:12 by Katie | 1 Comment

February is here, and that means all of you are probably gearing up for a sweet Valentine’s Day celebration. If you’re looking for easy DIY decorations to add to the festivities, look no further—this simple craft couldn’t be easier (or cuter)!

Supplies

  • Heart-shaped doilies (we found these at a nearby craft store)
  • String or ribbon
  • Scissors

Step One: Lay Out and String Together the Doilies

Loop the string through the existing holes in the doilies and tie it together one at a time to attach the doilies to each of their neighbors.

Step Two: Hang and Enjoy!

It doesn’t get more simple than that. We like the look of the doily curtain hanging from the window, but it would look just as cute on the walls, dangling from the ceiling or as a veil in the doorway.
