You Can’t Schedule Sick Days

For the first hour of my morning everything went according to plan. Then the girls woke up and all the plans went out the window.

For the sake of my over-scheduled day I tried to pretend that my 4-year-old didn’t feel warm to the touch. I tried to shrug off her sore throat as play acting to get out of eating the less fun parts of breakfast. Until finally, in light of her flushed face and refusal to eat anything at all, I finally caved and took her temperature.

The resulting number led me to have to cancel each and every one of my many appointments. I dispatched the other child to school with her dad and turned to face the sick one.

It was 7:30am and the whole day loomed ahead of us.

For a moment I was frustrated about all the work I wouldn’t be able to do, and then, as we cuddled on the couch, I realized that I didn’t mind all that much. For one day our job was to lay low and relax. You can’t schedule your sick days, but at least some parts of them are almost pleasant.

Thursday my 6-year-old will step through the door of her second-grade classroom for the first time. Her personalized backpack could have been the most memorable part of the day. Instead it’ll be her blinged out crutches. She broke her foot two days ago, a mere week before the start of school.

That back-to-school photo will be memorable for sure!

Back-to-school Traditions? You Tell Us!

We have a family tradition that is near and dear to my heart and to our stomachs. After the first day of school, once all the details have been sorted out, the supplies stashed in desks and the teachers greeted, the girls and I pack it up and head out for a well deserved celebratory scoop of ice cream.

We stand in line and I bite my tongue when they ask for second and third toppings. Then, laden with our overflowing treats, we sit down and chat about the first day. We mention what we noticed, what we’re excited about, what we’re a little nervous about. We take time to savor both the ice cream and the sweetness of all the potential that awaits us.

It’s my favorite tradition and one that helps make this bitter-sweet event a little more sweet and whole lot less bitter.
