Yesterday, my friend and fellow Tiny Prints co-founder Laura Ching was honored at a reception as Woman Entrepreneur of the Year by the Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment in Silicon Valley. While the award was made official last night, I was asked to provide a quote for the reception a few weeks ago. To express my pride and joy for Laura on the blog today, I thought I would use the exact same quote I sent in for the ceremony:
“I have known Laura for almost exactly 12 years. We have worked together for seven of those years, and through the passage of time and the evolution of our relationship, I have come to appreciate very unique traits that make me believe life would have a void without her presence. Many descriptive words come to mind, but for me, everything centers around the true meaning of friendship.
Our friendship has been tested over and over, as it often is when you spend a lot of time with another person—tested personally, tested professionally, tested through changes in our lives that naturally happen over the course of a decade. Through it all, Laura always has exhibited the quality of putting others’ interests in front of her own in the purest way possible, which to me is the truest meaning of friendship.
To be frank, knowing that this quality is genuine has allowed me to put up with all of her immature and childish behavior… And so even though Laura will make fun of me every chance she gets and exhibits passive aggressive tendencies, I am and will be a Laura Ching fan all my life. In all seriousness, not only has Laura taught me to be a better business person, she has taught me to be a better person.
As far as Laura the entrepreneur goes, what differentiates this woman is just as clear. Ferociously competitive, nurturing and creative, Laura has been a tour de force and a shining example of how to build a company from scratch. Others may possess these qualities, but combine them with Laura’s poise, quiet strength and humility, and you’ve got a rare combination that makes all of us at Tiny Prints lucky to be able to work with her. So Laura, thank you for all these years of friendship and success together. Congratulations on a well-deserved recognition!”
