Today we have the talented Jill from Jill Smith for our Designer interview series. Jill creates lovely stationery products for Tiny Prints, Shutterfly, and Wedding Paper Divas.
1. How did you get your start in the industry?
Growing up in my family, we were always making art of some sort. Professionally, I started in the print industry. I was Art Director at a magazine before I went out on my own creating corporate work for business clients. I found myself craving something more playful in addition to my corporate jobs, so I created a line of paper goods and sold them wholesale to boutiques across the nation.
2. Favorite perk of the job?
Always having art supplies at home to make art with my kiddos.
3. What are your favorite design trends right now?
Hand lettering, tiny, unexpected details and layering of patterns.
4. Go-to color palette?
I seem to be either all playful color color color! -or- all black and white!
5. Describe your own personal style.
I have a pretty simple style, but I like to add a bold twist to that simplicity–like wearing a huge, funky fabric ring to compliment a plain white t-shirt and jeans. So, by simplistic I do not mean boring. I definitely like things that are eclectic. And modern. Playful. And fun. This is true for my wardrobe, my home, as well as my designs.
6. What’s your favorite design you have created for Tiny Prints?
I hand lettered it and then added a tiny metallic heart, tucked in just the perfect spot. It is a wonderful example of my favorite kind of design.
