Most of us love to entertain and linger outside with our guests during the summer months and when the sun dips in the sky the party is just getting started!
I was inspired to create a DIY project using the mason jar theme in the Lemonade Love invitation to create a festive atmosphere during the day and a soft flickering glow in the evening. Using battery operated votives makes it completely safe too.
Mason jars are easy to find during the summer months. The larger mason jars used for the lantern project can be found at craft and hobby stores. The smaller jars, which I used for the lemonade glasses, were found in a set of twelve at my supermarket.
To make the card holder to display the invitation, cut a lemon in half length-wise then cut a slit in the top of the lemon and placed the invitation in the slit. So easy!
To make the lanterns you will need:
Fold the tulle over on itself length-wise and place a lit battery operated candle in the center. Bring up the sides of the tulle and gather it as if you were making a little wonton. The puffy top of the tulle will hold the next candle in place on top of it. Repeat with the remaining candles, stacking the tulle bundles on top of one another.
Tie one of the thin ribbons around the rim of the jar and hang all the other ribbons over it. Pull the thin ribbon tight around the rim and tie into a knot. Take the other two thin ribbons and slide them to where they will be opposite each other on the jar rim. These two ribbons will act as handles holding the jar so you can tie it to a tree branch if you are going to hang the lanterns. Tie the two thin ribbons in a double knot to the ribbon around the jar rim.
The wider ribbons are for decoration and can be any colors to accent your party. I chose a bright lemon yellow and white to match the Lemonade Love invitation theme. Tie them into a bow and notch out the ends of the ribbon.
You can also add colored paper to the top of the lid to carry out the color theme.
