When I was in the sixth grade, my local school district implemented uniforms for all students from kindergarten through middle school.

I hated it. Passionately.

I took to wearing purple tennis shoes and bright orange socks to give my navy blue jumpers a little more flair, but eventually the school banned those items as well.

School administrators argue that uniforms in public schools help kids to stay focused on academic matters, relieve peer pressure, mask socio-economic differences within the student population and help to weed out gang activity on campus.

As an adult, I think little ones look adorable in their uniforms (like these from French Toast!), and I sometimes wish someone would give ME an office uniform to make getting ready in the morning a little easier. What do you think? Are uniforms appropriate in public schools? Do they help the student population, or stunt their creative expression? Do your kids wear uniforms? How do they feel about it? You tell us!

So I wore a uniform my whole life, from 1st grade until 12th grade, and I never minded it. Given, it was a private school so it was more expected, but I never had to think when I rolled out of bed! And I still had my own personal style. It definitely saved me from the misery of competing with other girls, trying to look like others, etc.

As a teacher, I think that uniforms are a nice way to make sure students are dressed appropriately and arrive at school ready to learn. When they roll in to class wearing pajamas, hooded sweatshirts or baseball hats, I think it’s easier for them to slump back into a leisure mode that isn’t conducive to learning.

When I was in high school, we had a dress code… and it wasn’t that bad. We were able to wear different colored polo shirts and pants. Having uniforms can make it boring. I wouldn’t want to wear the same thing for 4 years… Dress code.. not uniforms.

I think school uniforms can be a good thing. It’s a nice equalizer and helps to make sure kids don’t wear gang-affiliated clothing or accessories. Kids might hate it but I think it can create a nice and safe environment for all.
