Planning a party and feeling strapped for DIY decor ideas? This adorable DIY topiary centerpiece makes a great addition to baby showers and birthday parties. You can use store-bought cocktail umbrellas in a set of colors to match your event (a particularly good idea for a luau or tropical-themed party!), or you can create your own cocktail umbrellas like we did below.

Either way, this fun craft is sure to make a splash at your next event!

Supplies

  • Flower pot or decorative bowl
  • Styrofoam ball and base
  • Dowels or skewers
  • Drink umbrellas
  • Ribbon
  • Faux grass, pebbles or other decorative materials to cover the base

Step 1: Make Your Own Drink Umbrellas

Find scrapbook paper in coordinating colors and begin cutting different sized circles to use as your umbrellas. Once a circle is complete, cut a slit halfway across the circle. We chose these pale pink and yellow hues to match our Baby Banner baby shower invitations.

Next, use the slit in the circle to wrap the paper around itself to create a slight cone shape. Use double-sided tape to affix the two flaps together, and then poke a skewer or long toothpick through the opening at the top to create an umbrella.

Step 2: Assemble the Topiary

Begin by trimming the base portion of your styrofoam to fit snugly inside the flower pot or bowl you’ve selected. Then stick the styrofoam into the base container and add the skewers or dowel.

To camouflage the look of the skewers, we wrapped the “stem” in this bright green ribbon and set it with a dab of adhesive from a hot glue gun about 1/4″ from the top.

Last, attach the styrofoam sphere to the top and you have the base of your topiary complete!

Step 3: Arrange the Umbrellas

This step really comes down to a matter of taste, but our advice is to arrange the larger umbrellas first and then add smaller ones to fill in the gaps. Make sure to spread out patterns and different hues to create a uniform look!

Step 4: Add a Finishing Touch

Don’t forget as a final step to cover up the styrofoam base with grass or other decorative material.

Step 5: Enjoy!

Now all that’s left to do is sit back, relax and wait for your guests to compliment your ingenious DIY style.
