I wasn’t allowed to eat candy when I was a kid. It wasn’t so much taboo as my mother just didn’t approve of sugar. The problem is that I have an incredible sweet tooth. I could eat candy and cookies all day long. So what did I do as a kid? I binged on candy on the sly.
I had secret stashes of chocolate and candy in my desk at home, under my bed, in my closet, and anywhere else I thought I could safely hide the sweets from my mom. I would buy chocolate bars at the grocery store on my way home and inhale them before I made it to my house. I would gorge on candy and sweets at my friends houses.
To put it mildly, it wasn’t healthy.
With my kids I’m trying a completely different tactic. I’m teaching them that anything is OK in moderation. We have candy and cookies at home, which they are allowed to choose when we’re at the store. After a healthy meal or snack, I let them have a moderate amount of the treat of their choice. They know what a snack portion of cookies looks like, and they’re fine with eating just one or two.
I think that I’ve successfully made candy and sweets the commonplace thing that they should be. I’ve brought them down to the same level as all other foods, thus taking away that magic aura that they had when I was a child. My kids don’t need to covet and hoard candy because they can have them any time (within reason). Some days they even get more excited about the fresh fruit we buy than the cookies we got one aisle over. As for me, I still struggle with not eating every piece of candy in sight, but I’m letting my girls lead by example. If they can be satisfied with just one cookie, I can learn to be too!
