A friend sent me an email yesterday. It started out like most emails, shooting the breeze about her day, her kids, her weekend plans. Then it dovetailed into a rant focusing on some negative aspects about her job.

We all do it. We all rant. It’s normal.

But I still didn’t let her get away with it. I could see she was winding herself up for a much longer rant, one that was going to end with her in a deep funk for the rest of the day. So I distracted her.

“Quick! Tell me five things you can think of off the top of your head that make you really happy right now.”

She hesitated for a moment and then replied. And her mood changed.

It’s not easy to look on the bright side of everything. It’s all too often much easier to gripe about the little things that bug us all day long. But happiness is a state of mind more than anything. No matter what’s going on it’s possible to be happy, you just need to know where to look.

Looking for the little joys that fill every day takes practice.  Keeping a Gratitude Journal on hand to jot the little things down when they come to mind makes it easier. As an added bonus, the running list can keep you inspired when the little gripes threaten to take over. I turned a Tiny Prints personalizable notebook into a Gratitude Journal. The pictures on the cover instantly put me in the right frame of mind.

I love your album, what a great idea! :) I totally agree that happiness is a state of mind and eventually it becomes second nature to look for the silver lining and find the happiness even during the stressful times.
    Thanks for the little reminder.
