A friend sent me an email yesterday. It started out like most emails, shooting the breeze about her day, her kids, her weekend plans. Then it dovetailed into a rant focusing on some negative aspects about her job.
We all do it. We all rant. It’s normal.
But I still didn’t let her get away with it. I could see she was winding herself up for a much longer rant, one that was going to end with her in a deep funk for the rest of the day. So I distracted her.
“Quick! Tell me five things you can think of off the top of your head that make you really happy right now.”
She hesitated for a moment and then replied. And her mood changed.
It’s not easy to look on the bright side of everything. It’s all too often much easier to gripe about the little things that bug us all day long. But happiness is a state of mind more than anything. No matter what’s going on it’s possible to be happy, you just need to know where to look.
