You Tell Us: High Heels for Infants?

Friday, August 28th, 2009

These “Heelarious Shoes” from Bel Bambini are soft shoes for infants designed to look like high heels.

Heelarious

I don’t even know what to say about them!

Does this seem bizarre to you, or just a bit of harmless fun? Do you think it’s supposed to be a joke? Would you choose these as your baby’s first pair of high heels? You tell us!

Bad News for Baby Einstein

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

If you were skeptical to believe that watching a video could make your little one smarter, your instincts were right. According to this article from Time Magazine, videos like the “Baby Einstein” and “Brainy Baby” series might actually delay the onset of language development in children and result in over stimulation and a shortened attention span, particularly in babies who are 8 to 16 months old.

The article is full of shocking revelations, such as:

“40% of babies are regular viewers of DVDs, videos or television; by the time they are two years old, almost 90% are spending two to three hours each day in front of a screen. Three studies have shown that watching television, even if it includes educational programming such as Sesame Street, delays language development.”

The antidote to all of this over stimulation, it says, is simple—just spend time with your little ones face-to-face. Reading together scored some of the highest marks in helping babies develop language skills faster and easier, but simply talking to your child can help as well.

So if you really want to turn your little one into a mini-Einstein, it’s time to put down the remote and pick up a book!

Adorable Gift Baskets

Friday, August 29th, 2008

A gift basket is a thoughtful and easy way to give a birthday or shower gift. The only downside? Gift baskets can cost a lot, running up to $200 a pop! But, there are some great ones out there that are much more affordable as well. Here are a few that I love, including one for baby and one for the new mom:

The Little Seed is a celebrity haven for eco-friendly baby and children’s specialty boutique items. It was started by Soleil Moon Frye and Paige Goldberg Tolmach. Here is their cute (if a bit pricey at $200!) Little Toddler Gift Basket.

This Basket of Wisdom by Martha Stewart has everything the new mom will need such as a thermometer, booties, and tea and candy for her.
