You Tell Us: Are Some Kids Movies Too Scary for Your Family?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Since Halloween is fast-approaching, I spent the morning browsing online for a fun list of the best kids’ Halloween movies ever made. What I found instead was this list of “The 26 Most Disturbing Kids Movies Ever” on Babble.

Here are just a few of the kids’ movies the writer found to be too disturbing for little ones:

  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original!)
  • Chronicles of Narnia
  • Dumbo
  • Bambi
  • The Labyrinth
  • Monster House
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • Old Yeller
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • E.T.

I have to admit that I thought this article was pretty hilarious, and raised a lot of valid points. The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite films to watch during this time of the year, but I have a close friend who is still haunted by the entire idea of Halloween Town. I also distinctly remember being terrified of E.T., regardless of his “cute” antics.

Do you agree? Are some kids movies too over-the-top for your children? Which films would have made your list? You tell us!

You Tell Us: Violent Movies Based on Kids Toys?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Everyone is buzzing about the release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra this weekend. Rated PG-13, it promises to be action-packed and full of big battles and violent scenes.

Like Transformers, G.I. Joe is based on a classic kids’ toy. Although older generations who grew up with Transformers and G.I. Joe action figures will undoubtedly flock to the theater to relive a bit of that childhood magic, but what about the little ones who idolize these toys today?

Do you think violent movies based on kids’ toys are a bad idea? Would you take your children to see G.I. Joe or Transformers? Are you concerned that they turn innocent playtime pals into something ominous?

What do you think about violent movies based on kids toys? You tell us!

Classic Films for Kids

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

This summer, I’ve spent a lot of time at the historic Stanford Theater watching classic films on the big screen. My favorite part of the summer program at the Stanford is when I see tons of kiddies there to watch a timeless film that still manages to transcend all of the generational gaps between them and their parents.

I can’t imagine a world in which kids haven’t seen The Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music, but there are other films that seem to enchant kids of all ages no matter how much time has passed since they were first created. Have your little ones seen any of these classics?
