GeekDad’s Things Your Kids May Never Know About

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Technology has advanced so much in recent years that it’s hard to imagine our children relating to our humble roots in VHS players, typewriters and card catalogs. GeekDad recently explored the idea of the generational gap in technology with his post, 100 Things Your Kids May Never Know About.

Here are a few of our favorites:

#1. Inserting a VHS tape into a VCR to watch a movie or to record something.

#19. The scream of a modem connecting.

#21. 5- and 3-inch floppies, Zip Discs and countless other forms of data storage.

#37. Finding out information from an encyclopedia.

#45. Not knowing exactly what all of your friends are doing and thinking at every moment.

#58. Putting film in your camera.

#71. Remembering someone’s phone number.

But we do disagree with #46: Carrying on a correspondence with real letters, especially the handwritten kind. Maybe we are a little biased, but there is no way an email, evite or blog post can replace the special thrill of a real letter, invitation or handwritten note!

Happy Best Friends Day!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Although you probably didn’t need a designated day to tell your best friend how much you appreciate his or her love and support, June 8 is officially National Best Friends Day. Take advantage of this chance to send your favorite people a few quick notes to remind them of just how much they mean to you!

Jott.com, the electronic post-it note

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I like lists–lots and lots of lists. In fact, I am the queen of post-it notes (see image below).  I use post-its for all the major to-do’s in my life and this multi-note organization system usually works wonders.  However, sometimes I lose one of my notes and I wonder why I don’t keep my information stored in one place.

That’s why I was excited when I read about Jott.com in the January issue of Real Simple.  Jott.com is a personal transcription service that allows you to leave a voice message of the important things that you need to do.  The message you leave is then transcribed to text and e-mailed over to you within five minutes. Note: The service costs anywhere from $3.95 to $12.95 a month

I think this is a great idea! Not only could it help alleviate my post-it addiction, but it might also save me during those annoying situations when I find myself without a pen to jot down something I don’t want to forget.   I haven’t tried the service out, but thought it was so smart that I had to share it with you.  If you’ve used this service, please leave a comment and let me know what you think.
