We have a family tradition that is near and dear to my heart and to our stomachs. After the first day of school, once all the details have been sorted out, the supplies stashed in desks and the teachers greeted, the girls and I pack it up and head out for a well deserved celebratory scoop of ice cream.
We stand in line and I bite my tongue when they ask for second and third toppings. Then, laden with our overflowing treats, we sit down and chat about the first day. We mention what we noticed, what we’re excited about, what we’re a little nervous about. We take time to savor both the ice cream and the sweetness of all the potential that awaits us.
It’s my favorite tradition and one that helps make this bitter-sweet event a little more sweet and whole lot less bitter.
